| What is a Penny Worth Today? Here are four steps you can take to make a Penny Sunday work in your parish. • Initiate a discussion with your pastor, the liturgy planning committee, and/or the stewardship team several months before Stewardship Sunday. Discuss the symbolism of the penny and its connection to the gospel message. • Ask yourselves: Is this symbol appropriate for our community? Does it conflict with other messages? How will it fit with the other components of our stewardship campaign? • Develop materials to explain the message you want to convey. Write something for the parish bulletin. Think about distributing a flyer after Mass. Have someone present an explanation before the liturgy begins and/or be sure that all homilists understand the concept and are prepared to include a reference in their homilies. • Assign responsibility for getting pennies from a bank and have volunteers at each church door to distribute the coins at each Mass. This could be a good activity for members of small Christian communities, strengthening their own commitment to stewardship and giving increased visibility to the idea of small Christian communities in the parish. |
